The City of Agoura Hills will be hosting its the first Annual “Community Service Days” on Saturday, May 3, from 8 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. Participants are asked to come to Chumash Park to sign in and pick up their free t-shirt before being sent out to various project sites.
Last year, Mayor Bill Koehler introduced the Community Service Days Initiative 2014 that included this new event. “It has long been my belief that a community is more than just a number of people living in the same geographic location,” said Koehler. “A community is neighbors helping neighbors. It is the giving of ones time and talents to improve the environment within their community.”
“Community Services Days” is a yearly program that will mobilize hundreds of local volunteers–residents, business owners and community members on a single day to help with dozens of projects that will benefit this community. The program will help the City maintain services, support many worthwhile local causes and give people an opportunity to volunteer their time.
Projects will include creek clean-up, local school improvements, graffiti removal and trash pick up. There will also be larger, more involved projects such as painting and repairing fences, planting landscapes throughout the city. People of all ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. People can receive community service hours for volunteering with the City and with the Las Virgenes Unified School District, as it is a Service Learning approved project.
“By initiating Community Service Days, I want to introduce a culture in our community where you and your neighbors are willing to spend time to make our community a better place to live, a community we can be proud of, and hopefully bring out the desire to contribute,” Koehler said.
After the service project is completed, volunteers will be invited back to Chumash Park for a free lunch, entertainment and a community service fair. Volunteers are critical to making this event a success.
