A small group of novice (and some professional) singers are making beautiful music at the Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park. “Creative Hearts Ensemble,” a group made up of over a dozen singers and musicians, meets every Monday to practice their craft and prepare for performances.
The ensemble began in October 2015 after Lyn Sacks, a YMCA member, noticed that everyone was singing along to the music during aqua-fitness classes. She asked the Y if there was space available where they could practice singing. The Y said yes and soon, talented musician and music teacher, Moises Mercado, stepped in to select songs and conduct the choir.
“The ensemble is free to join and is open to all in the community who love to sing,” said Mercado. “All levels of singers are welcome. There is no need to read music.”
Mercado starts each practice with vocal warm ups and singing exercises. He says he considers it a joyful learning experience. “We encourage those who play instruments to join too,” said Mercado. “We try to incorporate the instruments into the songs.”
Although the choir is only eight months old, it has already performed on several occasions and plans to perform at future YMCA events and at other venues. Songs in its repertoire include ABBA’s “I Have a Dream” and “Mama Mia,” “The Line Sleeps Tonight,” Blowin in the Wind” and a Italian rendition of “Time to Say Goodbye.”
Monday practices are from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Miller YMCA (320 Via Las Brisas, Newbury Park). “If you would like to sing along with us, come on over any Monday night. We will be happy to have you join us,” says Mercado.
