8th Annual Newbury Park High School Jazz Fest

March 18, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Newbury Park High School Panther Band hosts its 8th annual Newbury Park Jazz Festival on Saturday, March 19, 2016, starting at 9:00am. The Newbury Park Jazz Festival is a regional competition gathering middle and high school big bands and jazz combos together from all over the southland, allowing them to showcase their talent and receive valuable feedback from professional jazz artists and educators. It is also a unique opportunity for local jazz enthusiasts in the surrounding areas to enjoy world-class musicians as they play at an affordable local venue.

This year the school is proud to announce two headliner concert events that will both take place in the NPHS Performing Arts Center at 456 Reino Rd., Newbury Park. The first concert is on the eve of the festival on Friday, March 18th, at 8:00pm. The L.A.6 will carry on the relaxed tradition of west coast jazz in a contemporary setting while bringing in the more intense elements of hard-bop. Featuring Tom Peterson, Ron Stout, Ira Nepus, Rich Eames, Jeff D’Angelo and Dick Weller, the L.A.6 performs contemporary straight-ahead jazz filled with wonderfully creative solos while riding tight ensemble playing. Tickets for this event are $10 for General Admission and can be purchased at the door and or online at www.npjazzfestival.org.

On Saturday, March 19th, at noon, the audience will enjoy the Cal State Northridge Jazz “A” Band under the direction of Matt Harris, featuring trumpet legend Chuck Findley. The flagship ensemble of the CSU Northridge Jazz Studies Program will play some of the music that they bring to life at their performances, both nationally and internationally. They will also present pieces from Chuck Findley’s new album “Star Eyes”.

For the low price of $10, attendees will receive an All Access Pass for Saturday’s festival with admission to all of the school performances, a variety of jazz clinics and masterclasses, the featured guest concert at noon, and a wealth of tempting concessions. “It’s amazing how much this event has grown over the years and the level of talent that it draws” says NPHS Band Director Dennis Crystal. “The Newbury Park Jazz Festival has developed a tradition for hosting some of the most gifted and well-respected jazz artists and educators. Every year our students are introduced to some of the very best in the business; it’s a unique opportunity for them to learn from some true jazz legends!”

Tickets for the Saturday Jazz Festival are $10 and, like the concert on Friday, will be available at the door as well as online at www.npjazzfestival.org. All proceeds from the event will directly support the band program at NPHS and its students.
