Cal Lutheran Jazz Band Free Concert

Program ranges from Dizzy Gillespie to Goo Goo Dolls
Student jazz musicians from California Lutheran University will perform music by artists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie to the Goo Goo Dolls during a free concert on Friday, Dec. 9.
The Blues CLUS Band with Special Guest Enzo Villaparedes will begin at 7 p.m. in Preus-Brandt Forum.
Under director Uziel Colón, student performers in the Jazz Collective will play and improvise music from an eclectic repertoire comprising jazz standards and original arrangements of modern pop songs. The performance will feature “All Blues” by Miles Davis, “Impressions” by John Coltrane, “A Night in Tunisia” by Gillespie, “Maiden Voyage” by Herbie Hancock, “Sugar” by Stanley Turrentine, “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder, “Chameleon” by Herbie Hancock and “Soul Sauce (Wachi Wara)” by Cal Tjader
The band features music major Grant Escandon of Newbury Park, multimedia major Joey Luau of Alhambra and music production majors Paul Kellogg of La Crescenta and Cole Macpherson of Simi Valley on piano/keyboards; biochemistry major Cory Cranston of Santa Clarita and music major Patrick Hagerty of Valencia on guitar; music major Margaret Messina of Camarillo on bass; music production major James Daft of Rhode Island on drums; biology major Joshua Rouimi of Westlake Village on alto sax and clarinet; marketing communication major Dianna Rohrer of Chino on alto sax and flute; music major Caleb Solberg of Florida on tenor sax; computer science major Armando Santana of Pomona on baritone sax; and music major Michael Martindale of Granada Hills on trombone.
Venezuelan-born Villaparedes is a lead vocalist, trumpet player and musical director. He performs with Enzo Y Su Clan and Sonoclip.
Colón is a pianist and composer whose repertoire ranges from piano improvisations in Latin jazz to commercial pop, salsa rhythms and gospel. The Studio City resident has performed at events including the Heineken JazzFest in Puerto Rico, the Beantown Jazz Fest in Boston, CJW in Beijing and the MadaJazzcar Festival in Madagascar. He works for The Latin Recording Academy and composes, arranges and produces music for television shows and independent artists.
Preus-Brandt Forum is located at 135 Chapel Lane. Additional parking is available in the lots at the corner of Mountclef Boulevard and Olsen Road.
