Farm-to-Table Dining Experience to Debut at The Event 2016

As part of its 5th anniversary celebration, The Event, a fundraiser for the Las Virgenes Unified School District is connecting the community in a whole new way this year. On May 21st, from 5-11 p.m., at Calabasas City Hall, around 1,000 guests will convene for tastings from premier local restaurants and wineries, socialize in a tented beer garden and enjoy a concert underneath the stars. They will also get to enjoy something special and close to home that may or may not surprise some guests when they sit down for the program.

The producers of this year’s soirée are adding a Farm-To-Table Dining Experience, connecting established chefs with established farmers to create one of a kind tastings for The Event. “Building a business partnership between the restaurants and farmers promotes and sustains the local economy. Food that is purchased directly from a local farm hasn’t spent time in a processing plant or on a truck for shipment, that savings stays within the community, which in turn directly supports the business. The fact that we have some of the best chefs and farmers participating and the fact that the Farm to Table component is being so well received, shows how environmentally conscious the community is.” said Evelina Christopherson, The Event producer and co-chair.

Tender Greens Topanga Village and Weiser Family Farms are joining forces for the fete. Priscilla Lopez, executive chef of Tender Greens, and Alex Weiser, of Weiser Family Farms, will create a signature taste for guests. Weiser said he is “proud” to participate in The Event to help raise funds for the school district. “Anything we can do to support the kids and bring awareness to local and sustainable dining,” he said.

Now open at The Village at Westfield Topanga, Tender Greens was named one of the “10 Best Chain Restaurants in the World” byConde Nast Traveler. The executive chefs at each location focus on the use of fresh, sustainable ingredients through partnerships with local farmers, including Weiser Family Farms–a bio-diverse farm dedicated to applying sustainable farming techniques.

“Alex Weiser is such an awesome partner and respected farmer. I’m so excited to team up with him and The Event to create this dish,” said Lopez.

Other participating restaurants are Pedaler’s Fork, Le Pain Quotedien and Healthy Eats Organic Catering.

All proceeds raised will benefit The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools. “I love The Event because it brings our community together unlike any other event,” said Deanna Glassberg, The Foundation president.“Many of us moved here for the schools and when I see so many parents, community members and local business coming out to support our kids and our schools it warms my heart.”

Over the past four years, the community has raised over a million dollars for The Foundation, and the funds have helped manage class sizes and strengthened the counseling program at all 16 schools in the district.
