Like any typical 10-year-old girl, Lucy Babcock loves to bake. What stands her apart from other girls her age is that she turned her passion into a thriving business. Lucy owns and operates Lucy’s Bake Shop, which includes among her dozens of customers, the Topanga Chamber of Commerce and now, Sweet XO in Agoura Hills.
“A friend’s mom got me a baking book for my birthday and I wanted to try it out,” said the Topanga-based entrepreneur who started baking at the age of six. ” So I baked cupcakes for my Girl Scout troupe for my birthday, and they all liked it.”
All of the fuss over her baking prowess only fueled her desire to continue. “She didn’t want to stop,” said her mom, Jennifer.” One of my friend’s said you’re so good I should hire you, which I thought would never happen.”
Doubt didn’t deter the young businesswoman who gave samples away at places like her older brother’s soccer and baseball games, and people started calling. Her first major gig was her aunt’s wedding. “When my aunt was looking for bakeries, I said, ‘Why don’t you hire me instead? Other people are hiring me, so you should, too,’” she said.
Her aunt was so impressed with Lucy’s acumen, she hired her, and Lucy didn’t disappoint, making almost 500 cupcakes for the festivities. “Up until then, she’d only made a birthday cake [to order],” said Jennifer.
In addition to her repeat customers, the Calabash Charter Academy fifth-grader bakes custom-ordered goods for birthday parties, weddings, baby showers and fundraisers. She’s taken an online safe food handler’s course, has a business tax license and a business operator’s license. She makes up her own shopping list, creates recipes from scratch and even has a separate refrigerator. “She’s taken over half of my kitchen,” said Jennifer.
Lucy bakes cookies, cakes, pies, Whoopie Pies and signature cupcakes like Lemon Blueberry, Chocolate S’mores, Mint Patty, Red Velvet, Peanut Butter Chocolate and Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake. She also creates specialty items for the holidays. “For Christmas, I make a chocolate candycane cupcake,” she said. “For Thanksgiving, I made a chocolate cranberry pie.”
Earlier this year, she was given the opportunity to have her own storefront at the Agoura Hills Sweet XO. “We have cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, brownies, Rice Krispy cakes and tarts,” said Lucy.
To help ring in the holidays, Lucy will be hosting a cookie decorating event at the Agoura Sweet XO this Saturday, Dec. 12, from 12-2 p.m. For $5/cookie, kids can concoct their very own creation from one of Lucy’s sugar cookies. “We’ll have cookies [in the shape of] a Star of David, a Christmas Tree and other holiday designs,” said Lucy.
