Local Teen Theatre Group Takes Extra Efforts While Producing “Cabaret”, Opening August 4th!
“Curtain Call Youth Theatre is a company that focuses on the process first and the product second,” says Producing Artistic Director, Jeff Wallach. “And a show such as Cabaret lends itself to allowing the teen actors to utilize a variety of outside tools to enrich the rehearsal process, giving the actors a more professional experience”.
One said experience was inviting Broadway Veteran Performer, Lynn (Wynn) Noe to speak at one of the rehearsals. Ms. Noe had the honor of performing in the original Broadway production of “Cabaret” and originating the role of Lulu (one of the 6 Kit Kat Girls). At the 2+ hour Q&A with the 22 teen cast members and many of the designers/staff of Curtain Call Youth Theatre, Ms. Noe shared her experiences of the rehearsal process, performances, fond stories of she and her cast members (legendary performers Joel Grey, Lotte Lenya, Jack Gilford), and gave a mini-master class in musical theatre performing.
In addition to the Broadway Veteran, the cast also prepared by accomplishing extensive research on Germany of that time, multiple religions, and World War I and World War II. And, as emotions and issues came up, the cast also went through a cast-mindfulness exercise led by newly graduated psychology major and Assistant Director, Vivian Gibson.
All of this extra preparation leads to a more thorough experience for the students and a more enriching experience for the audience attending the production. This production mirrors the 1998 revival and pays homage to the choreography of Bob Fosse and original choreographer Ron Field. With the theatre’s intimate space and the production being set in the round, it should prove to be a truly “live-cabaret” experience for all.
“Cabaret” opens August 4 and runs through August 12. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online. Seating is limited so reservations are strongly recommended. There will be two days which will offer $10 student-rush-if-seating-is-available. Please check the website for official performance days/times. This production is rated PG-13 due to adult language and situations.
The performances will take place at Playhouse 101, 28720 Canwood St #108, Agoura Hills, CA 91301.
