(The following is from a press release)
The Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park will be collecting soccer balls and soccer equipment September 12 through October 2. The collected items will be donated to children in need in developing countries around the world.
Besides soccer balls, the Y is collecting ball pumps, cleats and shin guards. The donations should be new or slightly used. Collection bins will be at the Miller Family YMCA (320 Via Las Brisas, Newbury Park) and Oak Park Children’s Dentistry in Newbury Park and Cronies in Newbury Park
On October 4 at 3 p.m., volunteers are invited to the Y to decorate the soccer balls and prepare items for shipping.
“We are such a soccer-oriented community. Young kids have plenty of opportunities to play soccer here,” said Katie Beck, the Miller Y’s executive director. “Children in other countries are not as fortunate.”
The soccer ball donation drive is the latest community service project by the Miller YMCA. “We do at least four a year,” said Beck. “Everyone is invited to help out. We always need volunteers. In fact, we’re looking for volunteers with a beach clean-up day at Leo Carrillo beach on September 19.”
