Celebrating 35 years of protecting the natural and cultural resources of the Santa Monica Mountains, Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT) is hosting an anniversary Fundraiser Adventure at Dark Canyon Ranch on Sunday, October 30.

The afternoon offers food, drinks, live music and adventure in a spectacular setting within the mountain range. Dr. Bob Wayne, from UCLA’s Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, will speak on mountain lions and origins of dogs. There will be activities for all ages, including pony rides for kids and a silent auction.

“We hope the community will join us as we reflect back on all that has been accomplished and our vision for the future,” said MRT Executive Director Debbie Sharpton. The fundraiser will support MRT’s many projects, among them are the continued management of Cold Creek Preserve, the environmental education programs with the Cold Creek Docents, and restoring the oak woodlands and other sensitive habitats that were lost in the June 4th Old Fire at Headwaters Corner at Calabasas.

MRT’s headquarters, Headwaters Corner at Calabasas, was completely destroyed in a wildfire last summer. The fundraiser will also help rebuild the Headwaters Corner  interpretive center and plant new oak and walnut trees as well as reestablish a native seed bank for the mountain range. “We literally need help rebuilding from the ground up,” said Sharpton.

Since 1981, MRT has continued to work in partnership with the community to preserve and restore the unique Mediterranean ecosystem through land acquisition and conservation easements, habitat restoration and preservation, and education and research. Among MRT’s ongoing acquisitions is the expansion and management of Cold Creek Valley and Cold Creek Preserve, one of the most prized areas within the mountain range.

The all-inclusive tickets for the Sunday, October 30, Fundraiser Adventure are $125, and children under the age of 16 are free.

Dark Canyon Ranch is located at 25575 Piuma Road, Calabasas CA 91302. The event is 1-5 p.m.
