Mel, also known by the name Banjo, is a stunning, lanky, chocolate and white Labrador Retriever mix currently residing at the Agoura Shelter. We think he is a little over a year old, but aren’t sure because he had been previously adopted and then returned to the shelter in mid-September. He has been altered, is crate trained, and we are told he is housebroken, good in the car and getting better on a leash since he’s been with us.
The owners old us he is a high-energy dog that has some basic obedience training and is very smart. He is very “treat driven” which is great for providing training rewards. They also mentioned that he should be in a home without children. His length gives him quite a “reach” and his new home should be well fenced in. He can stand on his rear paws and come close to the top of a 6 foot fence with his front paws. You’re going to want to watch out for “counter surfing” in the house and some shoe chewing.
The volunteers at the Agoura Shelter have found him to be a great dog. He loves to play, race around our yards, run for balls (and sometimes returns them), water in our small pools, and has had a couple of fun “play dates” with another pup at the shelter. Mel loves people and shows it by jumping up on you, something to work on. He has all that wonderful puppy excitement and playfulness.
Mel is going to be a great dog in the right home. He needs plenty of guided exercise–walks, jogging, fetch–and some additional training to moderate some of the exuberant puppy-like behavior.
