A Resort That’s Going to the Dogs

Partners Susan Vasquez and Jeannie Wendell stand next a bone-shaped swimming pool on the Agoura Hills grounds.

Sprawling grounds, a sparkling blue swimming pool and shaded cabanas–sounds like the ultimate destination oasis, right?  It is … for your dog. Dioji K-9 & Athletic Club is opening its doors in Agoura Hills on Saturday and will offer everything you’d want for your pampered pooch.

“What makes us different from [other dog facilities] is that we are completely cage free,” said Susan Vasquez, co-owner who, along with partners Jeannie and Bryce Wendel, opened their first Dioji (sounds like D-O-G) seven years ago in Goleta, California. It was so successful, they launched their Santa Barbara facility three years later.

Susan and Jeannie, one time college roommates, decided to go into the business when they had a hard time finding adequate day care for their own dogs. “I remember living in Manhattan Beach and driving three hours to drop off my puppy with Susan when we would go on vacation,” said Jeannie. “I also wasn’t very happy with the places that I did try. So we got together and thought, ‘there’s got to be a better way to do this.'”

Dog club members are separated into groups based on size and play style. All dogs have access to the swimming pool.

The women decided that cage-free was the way to go. “The dogs that come here are never put into cages,” said Susan. And that includes overnight stays where the dogs are always accompanied by human support staff.

Dog club members are separated into groups based on size and play style “to facilitate the most enjoyable experience,” according to their brochure. The first visit is free, so the staff can evaluate whether or not the dog can “play well with others,” said Susan.

In addition to the day care, Dioji offers spa baths, dental cleaning and grooming and will have a fully stocked store of doggie toys and treats.
