This Week in Astrology With Nick Newmont: February 4th-10th, The Sun-Mercury Relationship

The planet Mercury is the closest to the Sun; therefore, its Solar Year is the shortest of all the planets. Compared to the Earth’s 365 days, Mercury takes 88 days to circle the Sun. Astrologically Mercury is never more than 28 degrees away from the Sun. Whatever sign the transiting Sun is in, Mercury will either be in the same sign or the signs immediately prior or after the current Sun sign. Case in point, if you are a Libra Sun sign, your Mercury will either be in Virgo, Libra or Scorpio.

Currently, the Sun is in Aquarius and Mercury is in Libra. These are two very different signs. When the Sun and Mercury are in different signs, the language I use is, “You behave as an Aquarian, but you think like a Capricorn.” Mercury is our conscious mind and communication skills. The Saturn ruled Capricorn Mercury has a mind-set of getting down to business in an organized manner. The freedom loving Uranus ruled Aquarian Sun wants to break away from the traditional Capricorn thinking and try something different. This is something we feel inside as a conflict of consciousness.

The following information gives you a thumbnail sketch of the current clash of concepts between these two, close celestial bodies:

The Sun is in Aquarius from January 20-February 19.

During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe. However, as the need for change becomes strong, don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Mercury is in Capricorn from January 8-February 13.

When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold, harsh or even threatening. For some, there is a fine line between realism and pessimism. One component of Mercury in Capricorn is brutal honesty, which is hard for some people to take. A fascinating trait that lies within Capricorn is a covert nature. However, when dealing with others, there is a strong need to get to the bottom of things and calculate what the bottom line is. So until February 13th, if you are going to call someone out on their shortcomings, especially your romantic partner, be prepared to have your facts straight. You will be get it back. And of course, Mercury moves into Aquarius on the 14th. I don’t think you want to be dining alone on the 14th. What is February the 14th? My topic for next week.

Until the 13th let’s refrain from making hasty decisions. Think!

Enjoy your week. Work a little, play a little.
