Well, we have survived another Mercury retrograde; it turned direct on Monday the 25. The next retrograde is April 28. During this recent Mercury retrograde, the Dow Jones Index took a big hit. It dropped almost 1,000 points. And of course, the sky is falling. Not.

Does anyone remember the crash of October 19, 1987? The Dow dropped 508 points in one day. Mercury turned retrograde on the 16. The stock market crash in October of 1929 occurred in the shadow period following Mercury retrograde. The two biggest single day drops occurred on September 29, 2008 (-777.68) and October 15, 2008 (-733.08), both in Mercury retrograde.

Does this mean Mercury retrograde is bad for the stock market? No. The planet Mercury rules communication, commerce and conscious thinking. Thus there is a reversal in business and thoughts. There are mixed messages which cause people to change their minds. Sometimes the retrograde creates a correction, because this period brings up past events or behaviors.

Mercury retrograde occurs three times a year and lasts for three weeks at a time. The shadow period refers to the three weeks prior and three weeks following retrograde. The thing to know is, if there is a major market correction in retrograde, the correction will right itself in time. A recovery occurs and the market bounces back. As of the close of business on Tuesday the 26, the Dow was up 282 points.

As an astrologer, I advise investors not to panic during Mercury retrograde. The final decision rests between the shareholder and the financial adviser. But if we over react to market fluctuations during the retro cycle, we can end up with a little used term–Sellers Remorse. Normally, we talk about buyer’s remorse when referencing retrograde, as most astrologers advise not to buy electronics or sign contracts during this cycle.

Mercury retrograde creates extreme, short-termed shifts. If you are in it for the long haul, and you have a solid portfolio, evaluate and stand pat. Over the next three weeks, during the shadow period, watch the Dow Jones movement as it gradually recovers and gains momentum. Once Mercury is moving forward, then it is Astrologically sound to make changes.

I have monitored the stock market for many years and Mercury Retrograde can turn the performance into a horror movie that may be advisable not to watch.

Breathe, you can open your eyes, it’s over.  Have a great week.
