Last week I wrote about the general rules and conditions of retrograde motion. Over the next several weeks I am going break down the conditions and effects of each planet in retrograde. You will notice that the Sun and Moon are not mentioned due to the fact that they are never retrograde. Even though the Sun and Moon are referred to as planets in Astrology, they are not planets. They are luminaries. The planets in our solar system and traditional Astrology in order from the Sun are: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
We start this week with Jupiter because it currently is retrograde as of January 8th and goes direct on May 9th. Jupiter retrograde lasts for 120 days and turns retrograde every thirteen months.
Jupiter Retrograde in the Natal Chart
Jupiter retrograde in a natal chart is overconfidence, extravagance, overbearing and brutally honest. It can create recklessness, lawlessness and problems with authorities. The individual may incur losses through misjudgment and gambling via over optimism.
He or she has a strong sense of righteousness and is very opinionated when it comes to religion and philosophy. He or she lives in a world which has been internalized. Jupiter retrograde pushes conflicts inward and backward into the past, and memories are usually exaggerated. He prefers to think on a grand-scale and can be very creative if allowed to do things in his own way. He may be over-confident and gullible. There can be a peculiar experience in connection with the affections, especially long distance love affairs and with political and foreign affairs. This person loves comfort and has a materialistic attitude toward life creating an over-indulgent personality. This individual needs organization or education and self-confidence and faith.
Jupiter Retrograde in Transit
Transiting Jupiter retrograde represents a time of philosophical or spiritual introspection and reflection. During the previous months since Jupiter entered the retrograde zone, you will have recognized or had been dealing with particular issues involving growth, development, happiness, expansion or success.
Jupiter retrograde means that whatever area of your life you have been developing is so important, that extra time is needed to make sure everything in order before you continue. You may be tested to make sure you are ready to receive what you are asking for. However, it could be that a negative Jupiter behavior such as greed or addiction has been getting out of control. In this case, the Jupiter retrograde will offer a chance to acknowledge and address the problem. Things may get so out of control that an intervention or some drastic event must occur in order to shake you out of your unconscious behavior.
By the time Jupiter turns direct, you should have come to terms with the relevant issues and be prepared for the next phase. In the third and final Jupiter retrograde phase, from the direct station until Jupiter leaves the shadow period, positive growth lets you move forward and reap Jupiter’s benefits. There are really no bad aspects from Jupiter, just overindulgence and overkill.
What are you supposed to be reviewing now?
Next week we look at Saturn.
Have a Jupiter week and keep growing.
