Weekend Guide IconSo much fun, so little time!   Here are our Happening’s picks for the weekend and as always, don’t forget to check out our calendar daily for lots of fresh ideas. 

 

 

Friday

Fizz, Boom, Read: Children ages birth through 5th grade can sign up anytime beginning June 16 through August 10.  Each child will receive a reading record folder to keep track of time spent reading or titles of the books read this summer.  Being read to or listening to audiobooks counts!  (Children 4 and under who sign up will automatically receive a special gift, while supplies last.)  Visit the library with your reading record folder each week beginning June 23rd and continuing through August 10th to receive fun incentives.

 Youth Adventures! at Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center: Join Youth Adventures for Ages 2 – 7.  Meet with a ranger to explore nature and learn about animals and plants. Reservations required: 805-370-2384.

Dos Vientos Community Center Movie in the Park, Monsters University: Join us for a feature film on a big screen, outside after dark. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, etc. At 7:00pm we’ll have game booths, inflatables, refreshments, and more. The movie is free with minimal fees for pre-movie activities. Featuring Monsters University on a big screen, at the park.  Bring lawn chairs, blankets etc.

Free Screening of “Wings of Life” in Thousand Oaks: Bring the family for a screening of Wings of Life, narrated by Meryl Streep. This intimate and unprecedented look at butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, bats and flowers is a celebration of life, as a third of the world’s food supply depends on these incredible and, increasingly, threatened creatures.The screening takes place at Horizon Hills School, 33 Greta St., Thousand Oaks.  Saturday

 The Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival: The Kingsmen Shakespeare Company is dedicated to presenting professional programs and performances of the works of William Shakespeare for the education and entertainment of people of all ages.  Performances are on the campus of California Lutheran University. To order tickets by phone, call 805-493-3014.

Free Screening of ‘Love Me Tender’ in Agoura Hills: The Agoura Hills Cultural Arts Council is presenting Elvis Presley’s debut movie Love Me Tender under the stars at the Reyes Adobe Historical Site. Allyson Adams is guest speaker and will discuss her father’s memoir, “The Rebel and The King” about his friendship with Elvis during the filming; the location set was at Malibu Creek State Park. Talk begins at 7 p.m. with the movie at dusk. Admission is free; event donations are being taken to support the Reyes Adobe Historical Site. Seating is limited and patrons should bring their own chair or blanket. Reservations are recommended and may be made by calling 818-597-7361.

Star Parties Hosted by Oak Canyon Astronomy Group in Oak Park: Oak Canyon Astronomy Group Star Parties are presented from 7-10 p.m. at Oak Canyon Park, 5600 Hollytree Drive in Oak Park and are free to the public.The mission of the group is to bring an awareness of amateur astronomy to the community by showing what they can actually see in the night sky. Sunday 

2014 Thousand Oaks Summer Concerts in the ParkThis is one our favorite local events of the year! Beautiful park setting and great music. The park is large and has a great play area nearby. Refreshments such as hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones, etc. are available for purchase. All concerts begin at 5 p.m. Call 805.381.1247 for more information or visit www.crpd.org.

The Kingsmen Shakespeare FestivalThe Kingsmen Shakespeare Company is dedicated to presenting professional programs and performances of the works of William Shakespeare for the education and entertainment of people of all ages.  Performances are on the campus of California Lutheran University. Lawn box reservations will be available in Spring of 2014. Individual tickets are $20 and are only available at the door. Youth and children under 18 are free.
Conejo Valley Community Concert & Jazz Band Free Concert:  Come join us for a new addition to our summer schedule, a free performance of the Conejo Valley Community Concert & Jazz Bands at the Agoura High School PAEC. Classic Silent Movies Featuring Charlie Chaplin at Paramount Ranch: Celebrating 100 years of cinema’s most iconic character, Charlie Chaplin’s “little tramp,” with a screening of several of his earliest comedies including: KID AUTO RACES AT VENICE (1914), MABEL’S MARRIED LIFE (1914), THE MASQUERADER (1914), Chaplin in drag: THE IMMIGRANT (1917), THE ADVENTURER (1917) Surprise short subjects will be shown before each feature. Enjoy live musical accompaniment by Michael Mortilla and films presented on authentic 16mm projectors. Paramount Ranch 1.5–2 hours. $6 fee.
