A native of Agoura Hills and an alumna of AHS, Hallie Weiner, one of the evening’s performers, is currently studying to be a cantor at the Academy for Jewish Religion in California.

Agoura High School’s Celebrity Concert Gala Fundraiser will feature talent from the community. The first annual event will take place on Saturday, February 21, at the Agoura High School Performing Arts and Education Center (PAEC).

The event, hosted by the Agoura High Music Boosters, will offer tapas in the Black Box Theater at 5 p.m. before the concert. There will be a silent auction and prize drawing items on display in the PAEC lobby. The concert in the Main Theater will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature several AHS jazz and wind ensembles as well as performances by jazz sextet L.A,.6 featuring trombonist Ira Nepus, in addition to vocalist Hallie Weiner.  Leslie leighton will be conducting.

Auction items include tickets to an Elton John concert in Las Vegas, tickets to the IMAX theater, and to a viewing of “Dancing with the Stars.” Also featured will be many one-of-a-kind experiences from local vendors, including one-on-one lessons with renowned musical talent.

Chiefly made up of musicians based in the Los Angeles area who came together over 13 years ago, L.A.6 continues to evolve their very unique sound, performing contemporary straight-ahead jazz filled with wonderfully creative solos riding tight ensemble playing.

Nepus, a Los Angeles native, was raised on the jazz heritage of his father, one of the key founders of the Hot Club of France in Paris during the late 1930’s. Nepus has recorded with Paul McCartney ( Kisses On The Bottom), Elton John, Leon Russell (The Union), Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ( all albums) Elvis Costello, BB king (2009 Grammy Winner) and has also performed and recorded with many of the jazz greats: Benny Carter, Woody Herman, Johnny Mandel, Quincy Jones, Gerald Wilson, Nelson Riddle, Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall, and Cab Calloway.

A professional musician for more than two decades, Leighton is currently the associate conductor of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Artistic director of Los Robles Master Chorale, and music director of the New West Symphony Chorus.

Proceeds from the fundraising gala will help fund new instruments and music department needs.
