(The following is from a press release)
“With a planned expansion of the Early Childhood Center to take place in the coming months, our school is paving the way to continue growing and serving our community,” said Pastor Tim Delkeskamp, “With over 35 years in Lutheran education, Karen Jonas is the perfect leader to help us fulfill our vision.”
The Early Childhood Center will be adding two modular buildings to increase capacity for the Infant Toddler center and preschool. The school’s certified Nature Explorer Outdoor Classroom will also be expanded with the addition of an infant toddler outdoor classroom and a new bike path for preschoolers to navigate. The K-8 campus will benefit from additional space that can be used for programs such as music and performing arts. “It is our joy to be able to love and nurture children, from the time they are infants through their preschool years,” said Pam Musburger, Director of the Early Childhood Center, “And seeing the children continue on to our K-8 campus and develop into bold, compassionate leaders, makes the experience even richer.”
For the past year, interim Principal Jim Neumann has been leading Ascension Lutheran School. “In an environment where enrollment is declining in elementary schools across the Conejo Valley, we have thrived with a wait-list in our Early Childhood Center and increased applicants for our K-8 program over the past year,” said Neumann, “The school has been serving the community for over 50 years and is well positioned to continue delivering excellence as Mrs. Jonas takes the helm.”
Jonas has been a Lutheran schools educator since the fall of 1979 when she began her first teaching job upon graduating from Concordia University in Seward, NE. For 25 years, she served as teacher, coach and eventually assistant principal at Trinity Lutheran Junior High and High School in Reseda, CA. During this time, she also earned her Master’s Degree at California State University in Northridge. Her former principal at this school told the Ascension School Board that if Ascension wanted “the best,” then Karen Jonas was it. For the past ten years, Mrs. Jonas has served as principal at Lutheran day schools, most recently at Trinity Lutheran School (which includes a preschool) in Anaheim, CA.
Mrs. Jonas was asked, “How do the Mission Statement and School Philosophy sections of Ascension Lutheran School compare to your personal beliefs and feeling on these subjects?” Her response was, “The Mission Statement and School Philosophy of Ascension Lutheran align exactly with my own beliefs about Christian education. Academic excellence is the greatest goal for schools, but providing a caring Christian community while providing excellence is the best a principal could ask for. Entering Lutheran education was a decision I made because of my own experience in Lutheran schools. Every school I have had the pleasure to serve has provided this quality and I am proud to know that Ascension Lutheran is part of that tradition.”
