I know, the Super Bowl is great. Really great. And long. Really long.
But even though it feels like forever, it’s only happening the last half of your Sunday, so you might want to take the kids out for something new and fun so they are too exhausted to be distracting during the game.
Here are my top 5 picks for family activities in LA this weekend:
There is really nothing like watching your kids look at a butterfly close up, so it’s a good thing you can enjoy tons of butterfly/kid encounters at the Monarch Butterfly Event!
It’s from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday, January 31st, at 1491 Mellow Lane, in Simi Valley. Being held by “This is a Monarchy,” there will be free fun for the entire family. Kids can investigate butterflies and caterpillars close up, plus enjoy a koi pond, horses, snacks and videos. For info, call 805 304 0369 or check out This is a Monarchy on Facebook.
It’s a fun way to learn more about butterflies. Did you know they come from caterpillars? NEITHER DID I!!!
Dine LA Week Various Locations
Calling all foodie families, this is your weekend to chow down! It’s Dine LA Week now through February 1st and participating restaurants will have pre-fixe menus inspiring you to try new foods and places with your family.
Find a list of participating restaurant here.
They can help you find some new amazing dishes in a cool atmosphere, and the only thing you have to worry about is keeping your kids from yelling “This is YUCKY” at the top of their lungs.
Thomas and Friends at the Discovery Cube LA Sylmar
If you say “Thomas the Train” to a 4-year old, you will see a bigger smile than if you said Elmo was waiting at the door with cookies and a bubble machine.
So take those little train lovers to the new Discovery Cube LA for the Thomas and Friends Display and let explore all the inhabitants of the mythical island of Sodor.
Click here for details on tickets and directions.
Then send Elmo, his bubbles, and his cookies over to my house. Actually, just send the cookies. Keep the rest.
Skirball Center & Others Free-For-All Various Locations
Need a good excuse to head to the Skirball Center this weekend? Well, it’s free on Saturday, January 31st. Good motivation, right?
In fact, that isn’t the only museum that’s free this weekend; most major ones in LA are participating including the Getty Center, Hammer Museum, LACMA, Paley Center, and the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits.
So make sure you take advantage of your local, kid-friendly museums and GO! You can get all the info on the Skirball Center plus a list of participants here.
You want to think green, right? Running out of good ideas on how to stay eco-friendly? Help is available to you at the Oak Park High School Super Saturday event.
It’s being held on Saturday, January 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Oak Park High School Great Lawn for our annual celebration of the environment. The event will feature a tide pool tank, rainforest animals, birds of prey, and even goats! Plus learn how to garden organically at the 11 a.m. workshop. You can also bring your electronic waste, clothing and medications for recycling.
Visit this website for details.
Plus you get to test drive electric cars! That’s just plain cool! (Don’t worry hybrids, you are both pretty).
