Even though the calendar says it is still summer, we turn our attention to fall activities as school bells ring. The calendar also says it is time for the late summer edition of Mercury retrograde. Mercury turns retrograde motion on Tuesday August 30 at 6:04 a.m. PDT. It goes direct on Wednesday September 21 at 10:31 p.m. PDT.

In a humorous way, I witness Mercury retrograde getting blamed for everything. Mercury retrograde has become very mainstream and people refer to it loosely with a mix of accuracy and misinformation. Even when we are not close to Mercury retrograde, “muggles” will experience some form of foible and question if Mercury is causing it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t mentioned soon in a TV sitcom. Alas, poor Mercury retrograde is becoming the 21st century version of Murphy’s Law.

If it’s Mercury retrograde, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

Yikes, do we really want to live like that? How many times have I warned against buying into astrological paranoia? Yep, I coined that phrase awhile back because of fear-based reality that people created due to planetary reversals. If we are not careful, we therapists will have to learn to treat our patients and clients for Astro-phobia (there is no such thing). So what’s the point? Lighten up! Mercury retrograde is not to be blamed for every little thing. The fact that most people miss is that many of us are born during Mercury’s reversal periods, thus retrograde can be an advantage for those born at that time. Too much focus is placed on what we cannot do during any kind of retrograde.

How about some focus on what we can do?

For instance, be a seller not a buyer during retrograde. Work on changing a habit that you have been wanting to change. Since this is a Virgo retrograde, this is the perfect time to create new habits regarding health, nutrition and exercise. Enhance your communication skills or open up lines of communication from someone from your past. Better yet, re-cultivate past clients you have not done business with in some time. Don’t be surprised if you hear from them. I am!

The question I am asked most frequently is regarding signing contracts during Mercury retrograde. You CAN sign a contract during this period as long as the negotiations and contract terms were clear and agreed upon prior to Mercury retrograde. As long the terms were in place, putting pen to paper during Mercury retrograde is simply a formality. Got it?

One last tidbit. People havebeen complaining that their electronic and wireless devices have been acting up for a few weeks. As of July 29, Uranus turned retrograde and will be until December 28th. Uranus has as much to with our precious devices if not more than Mercury because it rules the airwaves and electricity. Uranus’ influence is the epitome of “expect the unexpected.” Regardless of the direction of Uranus’ movement, we must navigate the sudden changes it brings. The sudden changes are actually subdued somewhat while Uranus’ transit is retrograde. The period of Uranus retrograde allows us the chance to think about our reaction to changes. It also gives us a chance to rethink and organize our need for change. Many groups formed while Uranus is direct, actually find more structure and organization after Uranus has begun retrograde motion.

Use the Uranus/Mercury retrograde overlap to slow down, organize and gain clarity. And this time around, give Mercury a break. After all, he is the busiest of the gods.
