We are continuing the series on retrograde motion. This week, we explore Saturn, the planet of karma, fate and destiny. Saturn rules Capricorn and the 10th house of career, success and public life.

Saturn Retrograde in the Natal Chart

Saturn retrograde in the natal chart means that there was a problem with self-discipline or avoiding responsibility. Saturn retrograde by position and aspect shows the areas of life, or the personality traits and behaviors, which specifically require extra development. The optimum Saturn nature is disciplined, responsible, stable, respectful and reliable. A healthy Saturn is hard-working and dedicated. The aim is to be physically and emotionally strong enough to endure the hardships of life, to take responsibility for yourself and your family. Disrespect of authority figures may be holding you back. Whatever is stunting your productivity is what Saturn retrograde focuses on. This could well have been an ongoing problem hindering success. Events or relationships will keep reinforcing the problem area this life, especially during Saturn retrograde phases, until you master it.

Saturn retrograde in the natal chart can give a deep sense of frustration, obstruction, selfishness and limitation. It may cause lack of progress, feelings of inferiority and shyness. Saturn always indicates a continuous karma from the past, and much of what is done is a repeat of the past. Retrograde Saturn thwarts ambition, lacks confidence, and is highly resistant to change and tends to keep the individual tied to the past and creates fear of commitment. It can bring struggle with opponents and hard work without recognition. It can be self-defeating, with many stress patterns. It can be overly critical due to lack of insight. Saturn retrograde brings karmic duties, and frustration can be therapeutic in developing inner strength. I have always said that difficult aspects and challenges from Saturn aren’t enough to kill us, but they make us stronger.

Saturn Retrograde in Transit

Saturn Retrograde 2016 starts on March 25 and turns direct on August 13 in Sagittarius. Saturn retrograde in transit is a regular cycle occurring just over every twelve months, lasting about four-and-a-half months. Transiting Saturn retrograde represents a time of limitation, restriction, anxiety and fear. Saturn retrograde means that whatever area of responsibility you have been developing is so important, that extra time is needed to take stock and make sure everything in order before you continue. You may be tested to make sure you are ready to take on the extra responsibility. The lessons you learn might be hard but they will be valuable.

While Saturn is retrograde, we tend to review our responsibilities and commitments as opposed to accepting them for what they are

One of the positive areas of Saturn retrograde is “buying time.” During the time that Saturn is reversed, we can slow down and plan. We should not rush important decisions during retrograde. We only finalize the project when we know it has been done correctly.

Because Saturn is big business and government, we can, if necessary, safely file a tax extension this year. This is due to Saturn being retrograde on April 15. However, you must be prepared to file once Saturn turns direct in August!

Another component of Saturn retrograde is the difficulty in ending relationships; business or personal. This is especially true for ending romantic relationships during this period. There seems to be some sort of smoldering ash that rekindles the flames and makes it hard to break up. The key to utilizing Saturn retrograde is timing.

Saturn gives us lessons, obstacles and disappointments. Retrograde motion is a time when karma is sorted out. Therefore, Saturn retrograde is a double dose of karma, but it is an opportunity to clear the past! Saturn retrograde 2016 looks a bit imposing to start with and does involve a lot of hard work. There is a major focus on addressing some previous or current disappointments involving your love life or financial situation. However, after the lessons have been learned, you will emerge to a more promising future of positive change and growth. Since Saturn currently is the sign of Sagittarius, expansion plans may be difficult or put on hold. The keys to handling this period are patience, perspective, process, perseverance and most important, planning.

My advice to you is to start planning before Saturn turns on the 25th.

Have a great week, everyone,
